Description

On the Saturday of Easter weekend, Saturday 26 March, the renowned Bristol tango trio, Tango Calor, will be joining us in the Bridport Town Hall for an afternoon music workshop followed by an evening milonga with live music and light refreshments.

The workshop runs from 3.00pm through to 5.30pm, with a short break in the middle, and then the milonga runs from 7.30pm through to 11.30pm. The Town Hall is a beautiful and spacious upstairs room in an 18th century building right in the centre of Bridport and with a great floor for dancing, all recently refurbished. If you come early you can spend some time wandering around Bridport's famous street market which radiates out from Bucky Doo Square, right by the Town Hall, and grab some lunch at one of the many good food stalls, pubs, cafés or other eating places clustered nearby. Or if it's a decent day, spend an hour or two at Bridport's harbour and beach area, West Bay, and its famous sandstone cliffs (site of the TV serial, "Broadchurch"). Just don't get too close to them - they fall down periodically, most recently a few days ago!

The workshop will be led by the three Tango Calor musicians - Mirek Salmon, Juan Carlos Gomez Pastor and Indira Roman - and will focus on learning how to play tango music. It follows that you already need to know how to play your instrument with some degree of competence - this is not a workshop on, say, "how to learn to play guitar". For this part (but not for the evening milonga) you'll need to book in advance. This is partly because spaces are limited in order to ensure that the three professional musicians have time and space to help you develop but also because Mirek needs some time to prepare parts and to email these to you in advance.

Mirek is an experienced and accomplished bandoneónist, accordionist and musical director who has played for touring West End shows and jazz clubs and festivals around the UK (he also plays accordion with the quirky and highly regarded "Moscow Drug Club" - check it out at http://moscowdrugclub.com/ !), has performed live several times on Radios 3 and 4 as well as composing for BBC TV programmes.

Apart from playing tango guitar Juan Carlos is known as a master of flamenco guitar. He's won numerous national and international competitions and other awards and has toured the world as a guitarist in different genres.

Indira is from Havana, Cuba, and spent several years touring the Caribbean islands singing with the Tabaco Band before coming to the UK in 2009 and becoming involved with various Latin music projects here, including her Colombian tropical funk project Aji Pa'Ti. She has a fabulous voice, a captivating smile and a big personality.

The evening milonga will feature live music by Tango Calor and will include complimentary light refreshments. Entrance is £15.00 and there's no need to book. The afternoon workshop costs £25.00, including free entrance to the evening milonga, and must be booked in advance.

For more details or to book the workshop contact me, Murdoch Mactaggart, by FB message or, preferably, by email to murdoch AT tangodorset.org.uk (replace " AT " with "@") or by phone on 01308 897231.

Because this is likely to be a popular event note it in your diary - and book early if you're planning to attend the workshop. And please let others know who might be interested in either part. See you at Easter!
